Origine du Groupe : North America

Style : Soul Funk , Instrumental

Sortie : 1967 - 1968

From Wikipedia :

At an early age Purdie began hitting cans with sticks and learned the elements of drumming techniques from overhearing lessons being given by Leonard Heywood. He later took lessons from Heywood
and played in Heywood's big band. Purdie's other influences at that time were Papa Jo Jones, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Joe Marshall and Art Blakey.

In 1961 he moved from his home town of Elkton, Maryland, to New York. There he played sessions with Mickey and Sylvia and regularly visited the Turf Club on 50th and Broadway, where musicians,
agents, and promoters met and touted for business. It was during this period that he played for the saxophonist Buddy Lucas, who nicknamed him 'Mississippi Bigfoot'. Eventually Barney Richmond
contracted him to play session work. In the same year original Beatles drummer Pete Best and guitarist Tony Sheridan recorded tracks in Hamburg with the Beatles. Later Bernard Purdie added drum
overdubs to tracks from these sessions, including "Ain't She Sweet", "Take Out Some Insurance on Me Baby" and "Sweet Georgia Brown". The main reason for this was to give them a punchier sound for
the US market. These tracks were eventually released on January 31, 1964 by Polydor. Ringo Starr's physical approach to drumming was probably influenced by Purdie's Motown style.

Purdie was contracted by arranger Sammy Lowe to play a session with James Brown in 1965 and recording session records also show that Purdie played on "Ain't That A Groove" at the same session.
This was one of several sessions he played with Brown and the track "Kansas City" from Brown's album Cold Sweat (1967), displays one of the most sophisticated and driving shuffles recorded for
Brown's catalogue. Purdie is also credited on the albums Say It Loud-I'm Black and I'm Proud (1969) and Get on the Good Foot (1972) on which "Ain't That A Groove" appeared.

Purdie started working with Aretha Franklin as musical director in 1970 and held that position for five years, as well as drumming for Franklin's opening act, King Curtis and The King Pins. In
1970 he performed with both bands at the Fillmore West; the resulting live recordings were released as Aretha Live at the Fillmore West (1971) and King Curtis's Live at Fillmore West (1971). His
best known track with Franklin was "Rock Steady", on which he played what he described as "a funky and low down beat". Of his time with Franklin he once commented that "backing her was like
floating in seventh heaven".

By Daryl Easlea from http://www.bbc.co.uk

Few acts have created their own universe as successfully as Brooklyn-based Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Forming in 1996, the band’s quest to create bona-fide funk-soul has long outlived their
original critics’ view that the 10-piece band was merely some form of extended pastiche. Using only original instruments from the 60s and 70s and recording in glorious analogue, they eschew any
post-modern references and create full-on, joyous grooves which achieve their aim of sounding like they were dug up in some dusty old vinyl shop.

Having cemented their reputation in the UK as being Mark Ronson’s house band and featuring strongly on Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black album, their albums have never quite captured their full force
as a live act. Soul Time!, a compilation of singles, B sides and live favourites of the past decade comes pretty close though, and serves as a perfect introduction to the band. Showcasing
bandleader Bosco Mann’s soulful writing, Soul Time! scores with its note-perfect emotion and keening brass arrangements.

Genuine (Parts 1 and 2), a single in 2004, opens here, complete with its fade and return; it sounds like something from James Brown’s People label, and sets the album’s relentless, upbeat tone.
New Shoes, written by guitarist Binky Griptite, is a pounding northern soul-influenced stomper. The 2009 Christmas single, Ain’t No Chimneys in the Projects, is the most successful track here and
underlines their formula perfectly – taking a beguiling title and subject matter (how a little girl receives Christmas presents in a chimney-less flat) with sensitive, nostalgic arrangements.
Co-writer Jones, of course, is the star, and sings of her mother, soulfully conveying her emotion and strength.

The Dap-Kings have also recorded cover versions sparingly (remember their version of Janet Jackson’s What Have You Done for Me Lately?) – and were therefore able to dodge carefully the Live
Lounge-inspired tribute craze of the mid-00s. The lone cover on Soul Time! is a beautiful, tender reading of Shuggie Otis’ Inspiration Information that fills out the sketchiness of the original
without losing any of its tentative, fragile wonder.

There is nothing modern about Soul Time!, yet it sounds both refreshing and contemporary. The exceptional musicianship and impeccable vocals may not be to everyone’s taste, but for 40 very happy
minutes, you can revel in SJDK’s very discrete world.

Switzerland this past April/May with Milled Pavement CEO Moshe), over 600 performances, 2 mixtapes, 2 ep's, 1 7" single, countless featured appearances, and performing live with a venerable
who's-who of independent hip-hop, Portland's own BRZOWSKI returns with his sophomore solo release. "A Fitful Sleep" finds our narrator moving away from the thick veil of funereal affectations of
his debut, and now speaks from a soapbox steeped in the culture of independent artistry and on top of a widely broadened palette of production sounds (most notably the coloring of early
Sabbath-style faux-psychedelia), even if the punk/ metal/ gothic/ outlaw aesthetics remain on the skin. This album begins at the touchstone of hip-hop, and then musically enacts a swift
departure. Doomy rock guitar/live instrumentation, Rapped/sung/screamed vocals, traditional sampling, ominous synths, and electronic drums all vie for elbow room in this carefully constructed
Frankenstein of an album. Think Black Widow mugging an early 2000's art-rap DJ outside a divebar on the edge of town.

Mirel Wagner is a 23 year old singer/songwriter, born in Ethiopia and raised

in Espoo, Finland.  Since age 16 she's writing gloomy Blues and Folk songs,

stripped down to the bone. It's just about her airy but rough voice and a

minimalistic guitar picking. Avoiding theatralic gestures effortlessly her

music has a unique intensity and emotional weight.

"...Townes Van Zandt once said that there are two types of music. 'The blues and zip-a-dee-doo-dah'. This falls into the blues category and a graveyard full of black metal guitarists couldn’t
create anything half as heavy and raw as Mirel Wagner’s self-titled debut album. ...In overall, this rugged, sad & beautiful blues/folk album is simply amazing. It is able to travel into such
deep and muddy waters that sometimes I can just barely see the surface, but I’m still fairly confident that these songs are more likely to heal me than drown me." (One Chord to Another)

"...Mirel Wagner is the real deal, an innovator among imitators. In a genre ridden with cliches she cuts through with the sheer the power of her lyrics and intricately fingerpicked guitar. And
that voice. When I first heard her perform at an open mic night in Helsinki a few years back, it was THAT voice that blew me away. Deep and dark, it is the antithesis of how a young woman in her
early twenties should sound. It has those world-weary and resigned tones that make Billie Holiday and Leonard Cohen so appealing. It sounds like the truth...." (Jean Ramsay/Rumba)

".. In her words and her sound you can see a landscape lit by full-moonlight, fog swirling about like ghosts dancing a slow waltz, stately old trees hanging heavy with Spanish moss. You sense an
eerie otherworldliness in the atmosphere she weaves, and you can't tear your ears away from that voice and that melody.

She has created something that you rarely or never hear these days. On the banks of the Mississippi Delta in the 1920s it might have been common. But the thing is, Mirel Wagner is here now, in
the second decade of the 2000s, and she's from Finland." (Spydersden)

Keller Williams - Bass

Origine du Groupe : North America

Sortie : 2011

By Tim Hurley from http://www.honesttune.com

Multi-faceted artist Keller Williams releases his 17th album this month, and it stays true to his one-name-album formula, this time with the appropriately titled Bass. Keller takes the reigns as
primary vocalist and bass player, and is backed by his touring reggae-funk band Kdubalicious, consisting of Jay Starling on keyboards and Mark D on drums (fellow Virginians who have worked with
Keller before as members of the reggae-tinged Transmitters). Williams may be primarily known as a guitar player, but he proves here that he is no slouch on the bass either.

His playful songwriting method and signature vocals are not much different from his previous 16 releases; however this project leans more toward jazz and reggae versus the roots, bluegrass, and
jam of most his other albums, and it benefits greatly by having accompanying musicians rather than his usual one-man-band projects.  Although this is not his first foray into leading a band
as he has done so before on previous installments such as Keller and the Keels, Keller Williams and the WMDs, The Keller Williams Incident, etc., it still marks a progression for his
ever-changing craft.

If any folks have been hesitant about getting into Keller’s music, Bass may just win them over with its accessibility and effortless flow. The airy jazz grooves heard on the excellent “The Sun
and The Moon’s Vagenda” – highlighted by Starling’s melodic piano and Mark D’s rhythmic drumming – as well as the upbeat, breezy reggae of “Positive” are smooth and extremely ear-pleasing.

His lyrical wit is strong as usual, displayed on the catchy funk number “Hey Ho Jorge” (I like my funk well-done, never rare … I eat the funk), the pop-reggae tune “Super Hot” where he rants
about the “hot chicks in the front row”, as well as the hilarious “I Am Elvis” (I like to snowboard naked in the morning, jump out of a helicopter and freeze my behind).

But aside from all the humorous lyrics and positive vibes, some of the best moments on this album happen when the trio shakes free from the anchor and jam, seemingly swimming together through
relaxing chords shown on such songs as the soft reggae tune “High” and the jazz-fusion track ”Buena”.

This album may not represent Keller’s strongest work (look to 2007′s Dream for that), but there is a certain wonderful chillness to it all. And you have to appreciate Keller’s choice to
continuously try new projects with varying styles and players. His first 10 or so studio recordings were just him and looping machines, which were becoming a bit redundant and tiresome. Over the
course of his last five albums he has gone in a different direction each time, which is welcome. He performs better as a band leader than a solo artist, this much is sure, and having the talents
of Jay Starling and Mark D along for this ride works brilliantly.

Bass is out now on SCI Fidelity.

By Wyndham Wallace from http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/pdhf

Think of Blur’s Damon Albarn and one thinks of Britpop, which is rather unfair, given that he’s spent the last 15 years working on projects associated with Mali (Mali Music), Iceland (the 101
Reykjavik soundtrack), China (Monkey: Journey To The West), the Democratic Republic Of Congo (Kinshasa One Two) and more. But while his former rival Liam Gallagher reduced himself to a comic
parody, Albarn found inspiration in comic art, teaming up with Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett to form the ‘animated pop group’, Gorillaz, in 1998. This summary of their career proves they were
no joke.

Perhaps the most striking thing about the music on offer here is how stripped down it is. The influence of dub and hip hop looms large, especially on tracks featured from their first two albums,
their self-titled debut of 2001 and its 2005 follow-up, Demon Days. These see simple instrumentation bedded down over programmed drumbeats that sounded nostalgic even at the time of release.
(Once upon a time they’d even have been described as ‘baggy’.) But Albarn’s alter ego seems to allow him to shake off concepts of indie credibility that he may otherwise have clung to, aiming
instead for the pop jugular with the simple melodies of Feel Good Inc and Clint Eastwood, whose loping gait does nothing to diminish that chorus: "I’ve got sunshine in a bag", a sly reference to
the actor’s classic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (also the inspiration for the name of another Albarn side project, The Good, the Bad & the Queen).

Eastwood’s there again on the brilliant Dirty Harry, another shuffling beat underpinning an uplifting children’s choir until Bootie Brown takes the mike. Albarn’s social conscience is also in
evidence here, the kids singing "I need a gun to keep myself from harm", an idea echoed (obviously) in Kids With Guns. 2010’s Plastic Beach birthed four further singles, but they made less of an
impact, despite the fact that they see Albarn pursue a more commercially pop route: Superfast Jellyfish demonstrates an attractive lightness of touch, while On Melancholy Hill reflects its name
perfectly, Albarn sounding glum over a candyfloss minor-key pop classic that deserved to peak far higher than 78 in the British charts.

Sadly there’s nothing here from their iPad album, The Fall, and instead we’re given the sped-up, somewhat disorientating Ed Case/Sweet Irie version of Clint Eastwood. But that fails to distract
from the fact that Albarn has, against the odds, proven himself to be one of the most inventive of the UK’s high-profile musicians over the past two decades. Admire the riches this national
treasure has bestowed upon us. There’s plenty to smile about, though Gorillaz remain no laughing matter.

Origine du Groupe : France

Style : Dark Jazz , Downbeat , Electronic Ambient

Sortie : 2011

The bizarre Dark Jazz cabaret has opened again. Finally, after years of waiting, the 2nd full length of the sophisticated experimental collective from France will be released. It features vocals
of Gaëlle Kerrien (YANN TIERSEN) and all lovers of DAVID LYNCH movies, artists like KILIMANJARO DARKJAZZ ENSEMBLE or BOHREN UND DER CLUB OF GORE and blue cigarette smoke in dark bars will exult
again.

Métamanoir sees the band shift from their smooth, minimal and instrumental landscapes on the debut record Parole De Navarre to a more lively and rich sound. Always based upon improvisation and
sound research, the solo parts of their music are now embodied by vocals.

The Quartet invited several musicians and singers to record, giving a phantomatic sound with oboe, clarinet, whitewashed drones popping out of the songs. The sheer chants of Zalie Bellacicco –
who appeared on the debut album - the deep tone of Ronan Mac Erlaine and the crystal-clear voice of Gaëlle Kerrien (Yann Tiersen's singer on his last Mute album) interlaces with the still dark
jazz of the band.

Always influenced by classic 50s cool jazz and the more contemporary noise and experimental styles, the Quartet and his guests built a dreamy card castle who swing and grow deeply rooted in
fierce strangeness of David Lynch movies.

Métamanoir has been recorded in their native Britanny country, deep west of France, a land swept by climatic inconstancy fed by wind, rain and mystery. A place which gives the music an
overwhelming but beautiful darkness.
