It may come as a surprise that the character of Dr. John, whose new album, “Locked Down,” comes out Tuesday, was birthed in Los Angeles. The mythical voodoo pianist-conjurer is so intertwined
with the stories, secrets and rituals of New Orleans that to suggest he is anything but the embodiment of the bayou borders on heresy.



But Dr. John — that is, the persona created by New Orleans singer, songwriter and pianist Malcolm John Michael Creaux “Mac” Rebennack — was imagined and realized in the entertainment capital of
the world after the young pianist moved west to find work as a session player in 1965. It was here, after hooking up with a posse of fellow New Orleans musician expats and playing on some big
L.A. hits of the era, that Rebennack started brainstorming a solo career and struck up the idea of a persona.



The one he came up with has endured for 45 years and has become a New Orleans archetype, so much so that his less inspired work over the decades has bordered on self-parody. His producers’ worst
reflexes have been to highlight his New Orleans drawl, create funky rhythm, roll out a catchy melody on the piano, stir in some gumbo lyrics about second-line brass bands and then punctuate with
horns.



But then, as if conjured out of the air, his new record, “Locked Down,” arrives, and it is one of the best of his career. As Bob Dylan did with “Time Out of Mind” and Tom Waits did last year with
“Bad as Me,” Dr. John does here: exiting a period of relative creative stagnation by creating something magical, the embodiment of everything he’s done but pushed in a clear new direction.



Produced in Nashville by Dan Auerbach, singer and guitarist for the Black Keys, “Locked Down” reunites the man (Rebennack is now 71 years old) who was inspired by James Booker, Professor Longhair
and Fats Domino with the abstract mystic Dr. John.



In his 1994 autobiography, “Under a Hoodoo Moon,” Rebennack describes that mystic as “a medicine man who claimed to be a prince of Senegal before he was abducted and taken to Cuba.”



He came up with the idea while living with a community of roustabouts in a Melrose Avenue building misleadingly called the Hollywood Executive Hotel and recorded Dr. John’s debut album,
“Gris-Gris,” a swamp rock classic, at Gold Star Studios with off-hours studio time paid for by Sonny and Cher. This creation has endured through swamp rock gems such as “In the Right Place” and
“Dr. John’s Gumbo,” both produced by New Orleans compadre Allen Toussaint, and has found remarkable rejuvenation on “Locked Down.”



This is due in no small part to Auerbach, who has merged the man with the myth by directing the project, compiling the band, playing guitar and setting a course.



As producer, Auerbach gathered the musicians, and what he came up with is stunning. Drummer Max Weissenfeldt, a drummer who has played with acts as varied as the Heliocentrics and the No Neck
Blues Band and whose wild snare patterns propel songs from continent to continent with each measure, shines everywhere he hits. Horn arranger Leon Michels is the founder of the Truth & Soul
label, has collaborated with both soul crooner Lee Fields and Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon; his brass bursts punctuate choruses and bridges. Bassist Nick Movshon’s roaming basslines are all over Amy
Winehouse’s “Back to Black,” and guide songs with both grace and urgency.



Rebennack cited West African instrumental music of the 1950s and ’60s recommended by Auerbach as an influence on this record. It’s especially noticeable on one of the album’s most thrilling
songs, “Revolution,” which features a doubled-up baritone sax pushing forward a deep, driving melody that recalls Ethiopian Afro-jazz expert Mulatu Astatke, a humming organ solo by Rebennack that
jumps around like a tripped-out Sun Ra freakout, and a wild but controlled drum excursion by Weissenfeldt.



Every instrumental break on “Locked Down,” though, is as kaleidoscopic. In “Big Shot,” the saxophone-heavy bridge arrives like a water balloon to the head, this big burst of joyous surprise.
“Ain’t no one ever gonna be like me,” declares the doctor, and you’ve got no doubt that he’s right. “I’m the big shot.” (If David Chase were still making episodes of “The Sopranos,” he’d no doubt
have harnessed “Big Shot” for a bloodied murder scene involving Tony.)



Lyrically, though, the mask has been taken off, and we see Rebennack not only as a Saturday night voodoo king but also as a Tuesday morning man waking up after a weekend bender and trying to come
to terms with what went down over the last 72 hours. Especially on the album’s closing numbers, the erstwhile Dr. John offers intimate, personal lyrics about the importance of family and the
generosity of God. “God’s been better to me than I’ve been to myself,” he sings on the album’s closer, and he sounds both repentant and amazed to make it out the other side.

Pas d'intro pour ce premier album, on rentre directement dans le vif du sujet avec Burnin' Dub. Breakbeats, sonorités jazzy et hurlements de guitare électrique. Déjà on sent que le groupe a
énormément travaillé. Confirmation avec How Do You Sleep?. Ambiance alarmiste, paroles revendicatrices, groove appuyé oscillant entre hip-hop et rock, et grosse basse semi-digitale. Final
explosif très néo-metal, rappelant que le rock électro existe toujours.

Puis arrive une des perles de cet opus : Handle With Care, le titre éponyme justement, n'est pas dub. Il fait l'amour au dub. Tout y est : le filtrage delay, la basse ronde et profonde, purement
dub, le riddim clair et précis, et la guitare reggae. Mais le plus vient des violons, tristes et mélodieux de Yann Tiersen. Si tout les groupes de dub était aussi carrés et anti-conformistes, le
genre se renouvellerait peut-être. Preface, plus court, change d'horizon. Downtempo et mélodique, une voix féminine éthérée donne une couleur trip-hop. Jah's Hardcore en revanche se fout
complètement de la douceur et de l'imaginaire. L'ambiance est froide et tranchante comme une lame de rasoir. On sent la tension qui règne, sans jamais pouvoir cependant prévoir l'explosion. Mais
tout arrive à point et le titre prend rapidement feu, se transformant en rouleau compresseur virtuel. Gros riff ultra-saturé, beat hardtech sous-jascent et jungle frénétique.

Retour au dub avec Afgan Evasion. Samples jazzy de nouveau, bonne basse. Cut Fiction sonne funk et trip-hop. Groove soutenu et violons. Musique de film.

Sur le fil retourne aux influences ethniques, chant traditionel tibetain à l'appuis. Dub/reggae très réussi sur 1 hausse d'intensité. Approche plus roots, effets stratosphériques et final
ragga/drum'n'bass inattendu. De l'électro-dub encore et encore avec D*bm*th*rf*ck*r. Plus classique, mais vraiment planant. Via Continum revient aux sonorités saturées pour une envolée grandiose
et mélancolique. Rythme lourd et lent, violoncelle, chant masculin hanté, atmosphère de désespoir puis de renaissance, de volonté puis d'abandon. Court mais intense.

Salystoar achève l'album sur un électro-dub évolué et rythmé. Le chant féminin traditionnel se marit à merveille aux structures modernes et urbaines.



A manipuler avec précaution certes, mais à écouter de toute ses forces.

Attention talent. On vous aura prévenus.

When I was in college I had to take one humanities class to fulfill a requirement for graduation. I took a class on the visionary poet and engraver William Blake. I found it fascinating, although
I admit that some of his more complex later works were a bit beyond me. Blake's work has had an effect on composer John Zorn as well, and he put together this suite performed by John Medeski on
piano and organ, Kenny Wollesen on vibes, Trevor Dunn on bass and Joey Baron on drums. The music takes on a mystical and hypnotic feel, perfect for someone like Blake who claimed to see visions
throughout his life. The most evocative pieces on the album for me were "A Dream of Nine Nights" and "Dance of Albion." The first opens with delicate piano, developing a spritely air with vibes
probing and the whole improvisation anchored by strong loping and elastic bass and deeply rippling piano. The latter has a feel akin to Zorn's The Dreamers project with Medeski developing a
repetitive piano riff, working dexterously, before cycling into a strong and ominous section, like dark clouds gathering on the horizon. "Liber XV" is evocative as well, with Medeski shifting to
organ, and Wollesen playing dampened sounding vibes. Rattling drumwork adds to the eerie feel of the music. This music sheds light on Zorn as a composer, and it is interesting how he takes
inspiration from different and diverse sources and communicates them to his fellow musicians.

Coupe afro seventies, blouson de cuir à même la peau ou col pelle à tarte ouvert sur une chaîne en or qui brille : chez Charles Bradley, il n’y a pas que la musique qui vit dans le passé. Et
c’est tant mieux. Comme Sharon Jones ou Naomi Shelton, cette autre grande voix de la soul a su attendre son heure. C’est le label new-yorkais Daptone Records, avec ses Reborn Soulmen, qui lui a
permis de sortir son premier album en 2011. A 62 ans.



Sur la scène de la Cigale, accompagné de ses musiciens, ses « extraordinaires » en français dans le texte, sa voix éraillée trahit le nombre des années et de litres d’alcool avalés. Sa soul,
elle, est intacte. Elle navigue entre la langueur du vieux prêcheur et l’allant d’un afro-beat soutenu de cuivres et de chœurs. Si son talent s’est développé dans l’ombre tutélaire de James
Brown, dont il a longtemps joué les sosies, il apparaît aujourd’hui comme le fier filleul du Godfather of soul.

Au-delà de toutes catégorisation musicale, Sandra Nkaké est une Reine, sa présence charismatique, sa voix de velours d'une puissance redoutable, sa spontanéité, son franc-parler sont
quelques-unes de ses nombreuses qualités. Elle avait époustouflé tout le monde au travers de Mansaadi (2008). Ses multiples influences francophones, anglophones ou camerounaises cohabitaient de
façon incroyablement harmonieuse sur ce premier Lp détonnant et étonnant à tous points de vue. Elle émerveille, elle fait grincer des dents, c'est le tribu des grands artistes. En attendant,
cette artiste à multiples facettes fait du théâtre, écrit sans relâche et s'avère une véritable performeuse sur scène, etc. La liste n'étant pas exhaustive, l'avenir de Sandra Nkaké semble plus
radieux que jamais malgré le fait qu'elle doit batailler tous les jours pour vivre de son art, garder son indépendance artistique, ne pas céder aux sirènes du formatage et une fois de plus, on
peut affirmer que c'est le tribu des plus grands.



L'univers protéiforme de Sandra Nkaké s'avère d'une richesse étourdissante, elle semble tout maîtrisé et a créé la surprise en reprenant Candy Says des Velvet Underground il y a quelques mois peu
avant la sortie de son second opus Nothing For Granted en mars 2012. Et même si cette reprise ne figure par sur le nouveau disque, il reste une avant-goût des plus appréciables. Non, Sandra Nkaké
ne fait pas que de la soul, non, à l'image de sa consoeur d'Outre Atlantique Janelle Monae, sa culture musicale ne possède ni limites, ni frontières, ni tabous : elle passe de la soul au rock au
jazz en papillonnant avec le jazz, le reggae, le funk et la pop en un battement de cil. Encore plus intéressant que les styles musicaux qu'elle emprunte comme des costumes, l'intérêt de ce nouvel
opus réside dans l'acuité de son écriture, la magnificence de cette voix fantastique, dans sa façon d'occuper l'espace en tant qu'artiste habitée et passionnée. D'ailleurs, si l'on compare le
caractère entier de la française à la frilosité des reines de la soul américaine (les dernières oeuvres de Jill Scott, Mary J. Blige, etc.), Sandra Nkaké remporte haut la main la mise : son
authenticité et sa créativité font la différence et la rende unique et si précieuse.



Ce sont de l'individu et de sa liberté qui font battre le coeur de Nothing For Granted, faire abstraction des préjugés, preuve de tolérance et d'humanité, suivre sa voie et surmonter les
obstacles sont une fois de plus des sujets essentiels qui tiennent à coeur à la musicienne et elle utilise des personnages atypiques (enfants, junkies etc.) pour faire passer le message d'une
façon surréaliste et débridée. L'opus cette fois-ci chanté exclusivement en anglais se partage entre morceaux doux amers et de véritables bombes énergiques, agressives, interpellantes. Cependant,
même quand elle nous caresse avec sa voix soyeusement rauque, on se prend toujours une claque : que ce soit sur le défaitiste Always Stay The Same ou sur l'instrumentation rêveuse de Same
Reality, Sandra Nkaké possède une force narratrice d'une intensité telle que l'on s'y croirait. Le morceau pop / hip hop Like A Buffalo, premier single de l'opus, est totalement addictif que cela
soit dans sa rythmique dansante, son refrain entêtant ou dans le rôle de composition de Sandra Nkaké.



La ballade tarantinesquement bluesy Show Me Heaven n'est pas sans procurer quelques frissons grâce à sa chaleur nocturne mais l'album retrouve vite une tournure plus aiguisée sur les sonorités
urbaines et vintage de Toc Toc Toc. L'artiste ensuite se pare des habits d'une petite fille qui espionne les conversations des adultes avec malice avant de reprendre du poil de la bête sur le
superbement funky et engagé Mankind. Le titre éponyme Nothing For Granted, de la même façon que Show Me Heaven, cajole et enrôle l'auditeur au son de la smooky voice de Sandra Nkaké. Loin d'être
une fan de reggae, je ne peux que m'incliner devant Rock It Better qui lorgne vers le côté roots et dubstep, genre glorifié par le grand Bim Sherman. You'd Better Dance met un coup de pied dans
la fourmilière sur des sonorités soul/rock et nous entraîne dans un western spaghetti entrant en collision avec un film de blaxploitation sur l'agité Skeletone avant de clôre sur le spirituel et
sublime morceau qu'est No More Trouble.



Un second opus plus que réussi pour cette soulwoman qui ne connaît aucune frontière artistique qu'elle n'est capable de repousser. Un must have absolu de 2012, une gifle pour la plupart des
artistes féminines qui se prétendent soul mais qui font en réalité de la variété.

PFL (Pre Fade Listening) are a downtempo electronica act, half-based in Hannover, Germany and London, UK.



Formed in 2003 by producer Felix Wolter as a platform to work song-dependant with different singers, PFL released their debut album Blue Dub Sessions Pt.1 only a few months later on british label
Elektrolux.



With several tracks of the album licensed for compilations, featured on radio programs and extensively used in the German cult-tv-night-show Spacenight, the name PFL became quickly established as
one of the finest in downtempo electronica.



Work on the follow up to BDS Pt.1 started in 2006 and halfway through the process of writing and recording new material, Wolter teamed up with London-based guitarist / programmer Jake Paland who
added another, more song orientated angle to the sound and together with Wolter now made up the core of PFL.



Something To Say, their critically acclaimed second album, was released in 2007. Featuring guest appearances by vocalists Julia Messenger, Valeska Jakobowicz and Betty La Gachette.

Project: Mooncircle, as the name reveals, has been on a journey to the moon since day one, exploring the frontiers of music and art, always looking for new discoveries and giving a different
perspective to look at the earth. In it’s 10 year history the label has published roughly 100 releases by equally as many artists from all corners of this globe and, therefore, the selection of
sounds on this compilation represents the development of the label from the past, present and going into the future.

L'art de faire du neuf avec du vieux.... c'est la prouesse réalisée par les Space Monkeyz, un collectif improvisé qui a refondu l'album éponyme de Gorillaz pour produire un disque de remixes à
dominante dub. Assistés par quelques collaborateurs prestigieux comme U Brown (DJ jamaïcain qui a travaillé entre autres avec King Tubby), Earl 16 (artiste reggae connu pour ses productions aux
côtés de Lee Scratch Perry, Augustus Pablo, Mad Prtofessor, etc.) et Terry Hall (ex leader des Specials, maître-ès-ska made in the UK et ami de Damon Albarn), les trois "primates cosmonautes"
dénommées D-Zire (alias Darren Galea, DJ pour Gorillaz et Jamiroquai), Dubversive et Gavva ont ralenti le tempo, syncopé le rythme, étiré les mélodies, assourdi les basses, supprimé une grande
partie des voix et ajouté des effets de réverbération, moult percussions, une importante section cuivre et toutes sortes de bidouillages électroniques. Il en résulte un disque cohérent, marqué
par le contraste entre la nonchalance de ses rythmes et l'entrain du ska. Comme il est d'usage pour les albums de reprises dub, tous les titres ont été rebaptisés. Si certains morceaux sont
facilement reconnaissables ("DUB 09" reprend la mélodie et le chant de "Starshine", "Crooked Dub" intègre de nombreux samples de "Sound Check (Gravity)", la plupart sont très éloignés de leur
version originale. Du tube "Clint Eastwood", totalement dépouillé de ses paroles, il ne reste que la superbe ligne de mélodica et quelques samples répercutés ("I ain't happy " et "sunshine"). Ce
mix très réussi, rebaptisé "A Fistful of Peanuts", est un savant mélange de trip-hop et de rythmes roots, soutenu par la voix planante de Earl 16 et le chant reggae de U Brown et enrichi de
basses profondes et d'un jeu de piano saccadé. Quant à "Lil' Dub Chefin'", premier single extrait de l'album au Royaume-Uni, c'est "M1A1" version ska, un véritable hit pour dancehalls.

Hint is one man, alone, in his portakabin in the deepest Sussex countryside, looking out the window, and looking deep inside, to make some very beautiful music.

Otherwise known as Jonathan James, Hint's musical tastes have gone through various transformations over his brief 23 years on the planet. From full on drum and bass to hip hop, soul to funk, and electronica to post rock, it all went in one ear and out the other as our boy finished his degree at Leicester University, and went straight, as all graduates worth their salt do, into working in a record shop.

Coming to our attention via what is, in the Leicester underground, still known as 'the best mixtape ever', Hint began to rock Leicester's minuscule nitespots, whilst secretly harbouring desires to own an MPC. Through a mixture of blood, sweat, and teas, the sampler was saved for and purchased, and was swiftly joined by Hint's hitherto hidden musical talents on the keyboard, guitar, and bass.

After Hint and cynical hack Joe90 spent many a DJ car journey to Leeds listening to his first efforts, whereupon 90, after being practically reduced to tears by the ramshackle joy of ruralbeat, told him he'd be famous one day, Hint was introduced to the newly formed Leicester label Deep Water Recordings.

'Count Your Blessings', the standout track on Deep Water's inaugral various artists EP, appeared, to be swiftly followed by 'The Beau Selector EP', which garnered eclectic single of month in Ministry, and a Peel Session. Imagine that.

At this point the finely tuned ears of Bristol's Hombre Recording's pricked up, as Hint literally gave up the day job, moved back to Sussex, and set up his studio in the portakabin to make some lovely noise.

Unable to resist the beguiling draw of Hint's new found 'rural beat', Hombre offered him a new home, and its there that he now musically resides. With debut 10" 'The Look Up', and follow up single 'Count Your Blessings' now out his debut album is completed in it's full laidback glory, due for release early 2003

Trio londonien, Belleruche semble avoir quelque peu changé la donne, après des réalisations hip-hop/soul assez tranchées, pour imposer sur ce Rollerchain une electro-pop de qualité, parfois froide, assez régulièrement organique, qui sur les cinq premiers titres  s'avère même assez enversante, sous la houlette de la voix de Kathrin deBoer et d'une instrumentation bien équilibrée entre organique et synthétique.

Le ton peut se faire froid et bluesy ("Reach for the bottle"), en gardant un cachet soul, suite à un début rythmé que "Stormbird", excellent, puis "Wasted time", qui fait la nique à Portishead, valorisent grandement. Un savoir-faire de taille s'applique à l'album, "Get more" s'imposant ensuite comme un standard electro-pop gentiment cold, que Kathrin encanaille et enjolive dans le même mouvement.

La symbiose est quasi parfaite, la basse déterminante, qui porte le groove comme sur "Afan", aidée en cela par les percus, et on ne s'ennuie pas un seul instant, captivé par ce revirement accompli, traduit avec la même magnificence par "Underfire", aussi cold que funky, ou les claviers aigrelets de "Henbane". Et on en profite d'autant plus que la fin du disque ne fléchit pas plus que le reste, sur les rails de ce "Limelight" alerte, s'achevant par un "Longer days", longer nights aux riffs funk greffés à une voix soul qui distingue à nouveau le groupe et Kathrin, en même temps qu'il impose une trame simple, dépouillée, et parfaitement conçue.

Pour, à l'issue, générer un excellent opus, aussi dansant que musical, facile à appréhender et fort de morceaux sans défauts.

Georgia Anne Muldrow est une sacrée bonne femme. Libre comme l’air, elle donne insolemment vie à tout ce qui l’inspire, à tout ce qu’elle entreprend, et ne se refuse aucun petit plaisir, du plus simple au plus conceptuel. Ainsi, on la croise régulièrement sous sa casquette de chanteuse ou de musicienne/productrice, que ce soit brièvement sur les disques des autres, plus longuement sur quelques collaborations approfondies, ou quand on ne s’offre pas totalement à elle en se délectant des quelques albums solo qu’elle a signé de son propre nom ou d’autres comme Pattie Blingh ou Jyoti. Pourtant très jeune encore, elle est ainsi devenue l’ambassadrice d’une nu-soul psychédélique et avant gardiste, un registre presque chasse gardé désormais, qu’elle vient défendre une nouvelle fois avec “Seeds”: un nouvel album ou on l’entend s’acoquiner avec Madlib plutôt qu’avec son cher et tendre Dudley Perkins (aka Declaime) avec qui elle avait pris l’habitude de collaborer le plus souvent jusque là. Il fallait d’ailleurs bien que ce soit l’incontournable producteur californien pour qu’elle accepte pour la première fois de n’y faire que chanter. D’autant que celui-ci, tout en conservant majoritairement les sonorités psyché qui lui sont chères (à l’exception de “Best Love”), s’est particulièrement montré docile envers elle en lui livrant des productions pour le moins taillées pour cet univers tout en douceurs et en rondeurs. Comme on pouvait s’y attendre, cette collaboration offre ainsi quelques petites perles que sauront apprécier les adeptes de soul les plus attentifs et pointus. Ceux qui, à plusieurs reprises (”Seeds”, “Hushfriend”, “Kneecap Jelly”), sentiront quelques frissons leur parcourir l’échine, ou qui mesureront tout le poids de quelques détails d’importance, comme ces discrets samples apportant l’infime touche funky de “Kali Yuga”. De jolies sensations incroyablement récurrentes chez le génie Georgia Anne Muldrow.

A Mediterranean Odyssey" was the second Putumayo CD I bought - the first was "Africa" - and this one's another great compilation. Generally the grooves here are not the harder drum grooves featured on "Africa" - they are lighter, folkier grooves, but they're just as inviting, conjuring up visions and sounds of the Mediterranean - guitar, accordion and high-pitched ethnic percussion are prominently featured instruments throughout. Again, there is not a single bad track here - each song has its own unique charms. Tracks 5, 6, and 7, by Barrio Chino, Lo' Jo and Novalia respectively, are my favorites and form the groove centerpiece of the CD - these three are all really beautiful and imaginative musical outings. They are sandwiched in between two lovely quieter songs sung by Spain's Maria Salgado and Italy's Lucilla Galeazzi, both of whom possess stunning voices, particularly Galeazzi. Miguel Gil's opening track is irresistibly danceable, and the songs by Spain's Luis Delgado and Sardinia's Calic show an intriguing Arabic influence. The last three tracks, all by Greek artists, are also superb. You can't go wrong with this CD - it will transport you!
